Classic Fighters Marlborough 2005

For all who missed it, this souvenir pictorial booklet of the third biennial Classic Fighters Airshow (sic) at Omaka Aerodrome, Blenheim, New Zealand over Easter 2005 certainly makes one want to be there for their next spectacular in 2007.

With 104 pages of glorious colour, half of those being full page photographs of the many aircraft taking part from all periods, this attractive booklet manages to record most of the action and atmosphere there, including reeenactments from both world wars. The WW1 flying pictures alone certainly make this worthwhile: the Sopwith Camel, Bristol F2B Fighter, DH2 and DH5 Scouts; a Nieuport 24, Pfalz D.III, Halberstadt D.IV and of course those five Fokker Dr.I triplanes, plus a BE2 under restoration.

The booklet is a labour of love covering everything that displayed, plus the various static displays, and provides a background to those who prepared the event, so it is thoroughly recommended, and an overall good read. As with their previous events held in 2001 and 2003, I'm now waiting eagerly for the DVD to appear! CCH.

Classic Fighters Marlborough 2005.

Golden Micro Solutions Ltd., 104pp, $1995 plus postage.

This book is meant as a souvenir of the Classic Fighters 2005 airshow held at Omaka Aerodrome near Blenheim, and shows just how far this airshow has come in the last five or six years. It comprises almost entirely photographs taken at the last show, along with detailed captions. And what photographs! This quality book will please any aviation buff; full marks to its producers for compiling it in such a short time. - Dean Calcott

Classic Wings Magazine - Issue 52

So you went to the show? Grab this book and reminisce about the great time you had! Missed the show?, shame on you!…but redemption is here in the form of a compact and concise bound book, which initially touches on the early years and planning of Classic Fighters before launching into a pictorial extravaganza of over 300 photos. All the participating aircraft are described on a double page spread, one of which features several smaller images and text whilst the facing page is dedicated solely to a spectacular shot of the subject. This format continues when describing the intense Hollywood style battle action of the two re-enactments: Le Quesnoy for WW1 and France 1944 for WW2. Not forgotten is the static park, restoration row and of course the French Theme of this years event. The publication captures the dedication of those who make Classic Fighters the success it is, and will only be eclipsed by the upcoming DVD!

Marlborough Express
Classic Fighters Souvenir Edition

Edited by Allan Udy $19.95

Reviewed by Robert Smith
For three days over Easter this year, the skies above Blenheim were buzzing with activity as planes from every period of aviation history took part in the Classic Fighters Marlborough air show.

Six months later, the sights seen in that weekend have been captured in a special souvenir edition book which looks at all the different aspects of the show.

Editor Allan Udy helped to put the show together and has spent the last few months creating this book, choosing more than 300 full colour glossy photographs, as well as text features explaining the stories behind the pictures.

The book has been produced privately by Udy and several other contributors, but they have created a product that will be of interest to aviation enthusiasts as well as anybody with even the slightest interest in airplanes.

A true labour of love, every aircraft that featured in the show gets its share of the spotlight, along with looks at all the other aspects of the show, including the ground theatre re-enactments and static displays.

The book also provides a bit of a history lesson behind the event and features articles on the efforts put in by dozens of volunteers to ensure the show's success.

The book is essential for anybody who visited Omaka over Easter and wants to revisit the experience, but it also provides an interesting and informative read for everybody else.
