Well, Spring might be officially here but it's still pretty wet and miserable outside at the moment. I've heard it said recently that the weather is supposed to improve soon, and that here in New Zealand at least, we should be looking forward to a long hot summer -- sounds good to me, especially if some of those hot days coincide with the many flying events scheduled for this coming season.

With a significant number of events on this years calendar we're expecting to be zipping around the country quite a bit for the next few months, so look out for us, and do stop and say hello if you can. With an impressive line-up of locally based aircraft, it looks like the displays at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton in both November and January will be ones to watch out for (and all things going well there may be another late in the season as well -- watch this space for more details).

Check out the event details and website links below, and we'll expect to see you there!

Regards,
Allan Udy & Alex Mitchell

Classic Fighters 2007 DVD Well Received

The Classic Fighters 2007 DVD was finally released in early August and
we've had plenty of feedback indicating most viewers are more than
happy with the disk. Here are a few of the comments we've received:

"The DVD arrived safely on my door-step at the weekend. Magnificent
job & well worth the wait!"

"Well, the dvd has arrived and was it worth the wait? You bet. It is just
fantastic and you all have done a marvellous job."

"G'day Allan , the DVD came yesterday, it was well worth wait and I'm
glad you persisted."

"I am VERY impressed with the quality and content of the disk, well worth
waiting for. Thank you once again."

"....while I was away the Classic Fighters 2007 DVD arrived. I've had a look
and it's an excellent production (worth the wait)."

So, if you haven't got your copy yet, make sure you do soon, as this is your last
opportunity to grab the disk at the pre-order special.

A trailer for the video is available on YouTube:

The disk features well over three hours of awesome aviation action. You can
check the details of what is on the disk here:

And if you haven't yet picked up your copy of the Classic Fighters 2007 Souvenir
Edition book, make sure you get that at the same time:

Propeller Bar & DC3 Day Trip To Lake Hood

Next time you're in Christchurch you might like to stop in and join Paul and Caroline from Wigram Brewing Company for a drink and a snack at their new establishment, the Propeller Bar which is located in the old No.1 Officers Mess at Wigram on Henry Wigram Drive.

http://tinyurl.com/4msywa

Notwithstanding the history of the location, the bar has a real aviation theme, the
Wigram Brewing team are most convivial hosts, and the beer is pretty good as well.
Stop in and say hi!

Their first event is a day trip trip by DC3 to Lake Hood near Ashburton on December the 13th. Travel to Ashburton airfield on the Southern DC3 and then transfer to Lake Hood for lunch. Only 28 seats are available, so if you are interested give them a call (03 341 8269) and ask for the Propeller Bar or even better, book when you call in for that beer and chat.

new Online Videos Available

In the last month or so we've added a few more aviation videos to our YouTube
channel, including some Spitfire, P40 Kittyhawk, and Sopwith Triplane footage.

Check these out at:

http://www.youtube.com/user/HAFUVideo

We've still got lots more footage in the archives, and will be endeavouring to
release some more material in the coming months as time permits. Feel free to
let us know what you'd like to see.

Photo and Video Shoots

While we at HAFU make an effort to get out and about and take photos and
video footage of all manner of aircraft (and sometimes motor vehicles), we can
only undertake these shoots if we know about them.

If you've got a flying event planned, or if you're an aircraft owner (or pilot) who's
looking for a bit more than some amateur snapshots and shaky video footage of
you and your aircraft, do feel free to let us know.

Do You Prefer A Plain Newsletter or Fancy?

We've been having a discussion lately, as to whether it's better to be sending out
plain text newsletters (like the one you're currently reading), or whether we should start sending out graphic-rich HTML format newsletters with lots of attached and/or embedded graphics.

I personally favour the plain text versions, as I'm aware that many people still have
problems reading HTML formatted email messages. So, to see where you are all at,
here's a quick survey. If you don't care either way, then just ignore this message, but if you do have a strong preference either way, please click on the appropriate link below to send us an email message so we can see what the majority want:

The first major aviation event of this season is AVEX, the New Zealand National
Aviation Expo being held in Hamilton between the 9-11 October 2008. AVEX is
primarily an industry trade show, but if you're in the area it might be
worthwhile taking a look:

EVENT: The Vintage Aviator Fighter Collection Display Day - 15 Nov 2008

If you have a passion for World War One aircraft, or would like to see what all the
fuss is about with these old 'string bags', make sure you head to Hood Aerodrome
in Masterton on the 15th of November 2008 for the inaugrual Vintage Aviator Fighter Collection Display Day.

The intention of the display afternoon (to be held between 3:00-6:00pm) is to fly
and display as many of the Fighter Collection's aircraft as possible, weather and
aircraft serviceability permitting.

EVENT: Wings Over Wairarapa - 17/18 Jan 2009

As we noted last time, the (10th Anniversary) Wings Over Wairarapa 2009
airshow is going to be held at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton (New Zealand)
on the 17th and 18th of January 2009, and as always it's going to be a great show.

The WoW website has now been seriously revamped and updated, so make
sure you take a look at:

http://www.wings.org.nz

The WoW team are about to launch their own newsletter (featuring more detailed
info about the show than we can cover here), so if you're keen to keep abreast
of developments for the show in January, make sure you subscribe to their periodic newsletter as well:

http://www.wings.org.nz/subs.shtml

With over 70 aircraft to be displayed, including a great selection of both World War 1 and World War 2 aircraft, this will be an awesome show to catch. Make sure you don't miss it!

Spend a weekend in Gisborne sampling the local produce and immersing yourself in a weekend of aviation fun and nostalgia. The proceeds from this event will be

EVENT: Classic Fighters Omaka 2009 - 10-12 Apr 2009

The team in Blenheim are making plans for the fifth Classic Fighters show at Easter
2009, this year with an Italian theme. For those folks that can't make it to any of
the North Island events this season, or if you just can't get enough aviation
action, then this might be another chance to get your fill -- just don't forget to
pack your favourite Pavaroti CDs and get into the spirit of the theme!
