1920s - 1930s: Ryan PT-22 Recruit

Of similar configuration to the Ryan STM, the more advanced PT-22 was actually a completely new design. The most obvious change was the engine, with the new unit being a five cylinder Kinner radial - it is this that provides the PT-22 with its distinctive sound.

Nearly 1200 PT-22s were built for the USAAF and the US Navy, but only one example has ever been seen in New Zealand.

Acquired by Les Marshall of Auckland, the machine was subsequently restored to the immaculate condition it's in today.
